THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified operations against armed robbery and violent crime following a spike in attacks across Harare and surrounding suburbs.
Police have launched a manhunt for suspects linked to a string of robberies in Mabelreign and the Greater Harare Suburban District, amid growing concern over rising violent crime in the capital.
The suspects, believed to be operating as a gang of four, have been targeting churches, schools and private homes, using violence to gain entry, subdue victims and steal cash and other valuables.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ZRP appealed to members of the public for information that could help identify a key suspect whose image was captured on CCTV at a crime scene in Mabelreign.
Meanwhile, armed gangs are also reported to be terrorising pedestrians and motorists during the night and early morning hours in several parts of the city.
Crime hotspots include Chitungwiza Road near paMasteps, High Glen Roundabout, the GMB Aspindale industrial area near the railway line, as well as the Simon Mazorodze and Mupedzanhamo flyovers in Mbare.
Residents say the gangs often hide in poorly lit areas, targeting unsuspecting travellers, motorists and even stranded drivers.
Officer-in-Charge at ZRP Mbare Matapi, Chief Inspector Friday Sibanda warned the public against using the Mupedzanhamo flyover, particularly during vulnerable hours.
“We are saying do not walk alone in the area around Mbare Mupedzanhamo because you will lose your valuables. There are many instances where we receive reports of people having been robbed and murdered in this area,” he said.
The police have since increased patrols in Mabelreign and other high-risk areas, with investigations already yielding promising leads.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid isolated routes at night and promptly report suspicious activity as efforts continue to restore safety and curb violent crime in the capital.
