A sense of fear has engulfed communities in Plumtree and surrounding areas after convicted serial rapist and murderer Cabangani “Mike” Mathe escaped from Plumtree Prison over the weekend.
Mathe is reported to have used a hacksaw to cut through a window before fleeing the correctional facility, leaving fellow inmates and officials stunned. From Mphoengs to Maitengwe, residents across Bukalanga say they are anxious and on alert following the escape of the notorious offender.
In one village, which cannot be named to protect the identity of a victim, ZBC News encountered a family still recovering from trauma linked to Mathe’s crimes.
Gogo Moyo (not her real name), whose granddaughter was raped and murdered by Mathe, said she fears for her family’s safety.
“I am grateful to be alive today, but I was told he is out, and I am not sure if we will live to see tomorrow. The way my granddaughter was killed, now I am left with this child. What can I do?” she asked, breaking down in tears.
“This boy cannot even stand the sight of a car because of how everything happened. God knows.”
The mention of Mathe’s name sends chills through the community; even traditional leaders are reluctant to speak about him.
“We are worried. How did he escape? Why did he escape alone when there were other inmates?” asked one villager.
“Why was he still at Plumtree Prison when he had already been sentenced to 20 years for rape?” questioned another.
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has confirmed the escape and appealed for public assistance in locating the fugitive.
“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that an inmate unlawfully escaped from Plumtree Prison. We want to assure the nation that investigations into this incident are underway, and we are working diligently to apprehend the escaped inmate and prevent any further occurrences,” said ZPCS spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi.
Mathe’s criminal record stretches back to 2013.
ZBC News is in possession of case numbers and references for some of his documented offences, which range from assault, robbery, possession of stolen goods, indecent assault, domestic violence, and armed robbery.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any information that may lead to Mathe’s arrest.
