GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to developing sports infrastructure nationwide following the commissioning of the Juru Multi-Purpose Sports Facility in Goromonzi this Thursday.
The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture inaugurated the facility at Oliver Juru Primary School in a move aimed at promoting grassroots sports and community development.
The facility comprises tennis, volleyball and netball courts.
“As a school, we can take part in all kinds of sporting disciplines. Sport is important as it keeps us fit,” student, Alicia Hlupo said.
“We are very, very grateful for this facility, and our kids can now compete in sporting activities such as tennis with schools in Harare,” parent, Tendai Munaku said.
“We are going to see stars emerging from this state-of-the-art facility. This is going to reduce drug and substance abuse amongst the youths,” community member Johannes Nherera said.
Through setting up multi-purpose sports facilities across the country, the government is cognisant of the immense benefits to sport and community development.
“This project underscores our dedication to sports development as a catalyst for economic growth and social cohesion in conformity with our national development blueprints, the National Development Strategy 1(NDS1), which is being concluded and indeed the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2). By investing in facilities such as this one, we are not only promoting physical well-being but nurturing the rich potential of our youth,” the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe said.
“This day marks not just the unveiling of a multi-purpose sports facility but the commencement of new opportunities, dreams, and a brighter future for our school children and youths. Sport plays a vital role in the development of young people,” Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo said.
Similar multi-purpose sports facilities are set to be constructed across the country to empower aspiring sportspersons and keep youths away from drug and substance abuse.
