New Mberengwa rig tackles water woes

Story by Courage Bushe

THE Mberengwa Rural District Council, empowered by the government’s devolution programme, has acquired a drilling rig as the local authority steps up efforts to address the prevailing water challenges in the district.

The community is confident the newly-commissioned equipment will address water challenges in the district.

“We are happy to be commissioning the drill rig, and we look forward to ending water challenges in our district,” said a Mberengwa community member.

Another said, “We are happy, especially since the rig will be used to drill boreholes from where we will get potable water.”

Mberengwa East legislator, Honourable Tasara Hungwe is confident that the new equipment will spur rural development.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa for availing devolution funds used to procure some of the equipment for the RDC and also commend the local authority for using the funds productively. The equipment will go a long way in improving service delivery for local people,” said Honourable Hungwe.

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, emphasised the importance of water access in achieving national goals.

“This event not only represents a remarkable achievement but also exemplifies the transformative work being carried out by the Second Republic under the unparalleled leadership of His Excellency President Mnangagwa. The devolution programme has managed to transform our communities in the Midlands province and I am sure that at this pace, Vision 2030 is achievable before 2030.”

The new drilling rig complements the government’s Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme which is targeting to sink 35 000 solar-powered boreholes across the country.
