AFRICA’S shared challenges, the power of knowledge and the need to preserve the continent’s history and cultural heritage dominated discussions at a public lecture held at The Heritage Village in Harare on Friday as part of the Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK)’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
The lecture brought together scholars, activists and stakeholders, who stressed that education, culture and indigenous knowledge are central to helping Africans understand their identity and drive the continent’s development.
Founder of the African Diaspora Development Institute, Ambassador Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao, said Africa’s transformation depends on empowering its people through knowledge.
“Knowledge is power. Once people are liberated and understand the importance of standing on their own, demanding respect, pursuing economic liberation and rebuilding both their individual countries and the African continent, development will become easier.
“Our greatest challenge is that we were defeated in the mind. We were colonised, brainwashed and intentionally put to sleep. Africans must realise that we do not belong where others tell us we belong.”
The celebrations also reflected on INSTAK’s work over the past decade in promoting African knowledge and heritage through initiatives such as the Museum of African Liberation project, the Solidarity Garden and the publication of African knowledge resources.
Pan-African activist Ms Nathalie Yamb commended the institute’s efforts to preserve Africa’s liberation history and cultural identity.
“I am amazed by what has been achieved through the Museum of African Liberation initiative. The building is nearing completion; there is the Solidarity Garden, the Africa Factbooks and many other projects that INSTAK has undertaken over the past 10 years.
“I hope to return for INSTAK@20 and witness even greater milestones.”
The lecture reinforced the importance of knowledge, innovation and cultural awareness in shaping future generations and advancing Africa’s development agenda.
