Munhumutapa Cup boosts football development in Central Region

EXCITEMENT is building across Zimbabwe’s Central Region following the draw for the inaugural ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, with clubs eager to seize the opportunities presented by the prestigious tournament.
The draw, conducted in Shurugwi on Saturday, set the stage for a series of compelling preliminary-round fixtures.
Among the standout ties, Grain Tigers will host Sabi Gold, while Dulibadzimu take on ZRP Gwanda in what is expected to be one of the headline clashes of the opening round.
Club representatives welcomed both the transparency of the draw and the broader significance of the tournament, describing it as a major boost for football development in the region.
They said the competition offers an important platform for clubs to showcase talent, raise standards and strengthen the game at grassroots and regional level.
The initiative has also been widely praised for the support it has received from Government and the Zimbabwe Football Association.
ZIFA Central Region Chairperson Patrick Hill said the tournament presents a timely opportunity for the region to accelerate its football development agenda.
“This participation comes at the right time to position the Central Region for further growth. Being part of such a prestigious competition is an opportunity we must fully embrace,” he said.
The Munhumutapa Cup is expected to enhance competition across all regions while creating a pathway for clubs to gain national and continental exposure.
Four teams from the Central Region will progress to the second knockout round, ensuring fierce competition as clubs battle for advancement.
The stakes are particularly high, with the winner of Zimbabwe’s premier knockout competition earning qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup next year.
For clubs in the Central Region, the tournament represents more than just silverware it is a gateway to greater visibility, development and the chance to compete on the continental stage.
