Modernisation of Beitbridge Border Post boosts efficiency

THE modernisation of Beitbridge Border Post has transformed the flow of traffic, with automation of the clearance system increasing efficiency and reducing corruption.

The previously predominantly manual system relied heavily on paperwork, with documents moved from one office to another. The upgraded system, however, allows vehicles to be processed electronically from entry to exit.

“The moment you enter, you get your coupon and that coupon gives you passage until exit. At the moment, we are processing about 1 000 vehicles per day, which is massive compared to the old system,” ZIMBORDERS’ Information Technology Site Manager, Mr Jeremiah Matongoti said.

Truck drivers attest to the efficiency of the new system, which has also created employment for locals.

“The old system was haphazard, but now there is order because if there is no more parking space ahead of you, the boom automatically closes until the space is clear, that is a good job,” a driver attested.

“For us locals, we are happy about this modernisation because it brought employment for us,” a local resident noted.

The border is also fixed with big electronic callout boards that give directions without human interaction.

“We believe that as we advance with modernisation and automation, we are significantly contributing to the government’s vision for an improved economy by 2030. We are grateful to be chosen as a flagship project that directly supports this initiative,” ZIMBORDERS General Manager, Mr Nqobile Ncube said.

The modernisation of Beitbridge border post is one of the key government milestones, and efforts are being put to upgrade other ports of entry, including Forbes Border Post in Mutare.
