MASHONALAND East province is on track to achieve its set wheat target of 22 500 hectares, with government encouraging farmers to continue planting the winter crop.

The wheat season is progressing well in Mashonaland East province, with over 15 000 hectares planted so far against a target of 22 500 hectares.

In an interview with ZBC News, the Acting Provincial Director – Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services, Mr Callisto Masiiwa expressed optimism on meeting the provincial target as the government extends the planting window.

“As a province, we have planted 75 percent of our wheat target. Building on last year’s success, I am optimistic we will achieve our set target. There has been movement of seed for both the Presidential Inputs Programme and those contracted by ARDA. Our message to our farmers is to continue planting.”

A visit to Chiparawe and Waalwick Farms in Marondera District revealed that farmers are ready to contribute to the national food basket.

“At Chiparawe Farm, like last year, we have maintained our 20 hectares of wheat. We are looking forward to getting a better yield this year between 8 and 9 tonnes per hectare,” farmer, Russell Chiradza said.

“We have planted 30 hectares of wheat on this farm. The season is going well, but we appeal to the government to avail top dressing fertilisers on time,” another farmer noted.

Last year, Mashonaland East province surpassed its target of 21 000 hectares after reaching 21 987 hectares.
