THE National Youth Service(NYS) has been lauded for forging unity among youths and becoming an important tool in fighting the drug and substance abuse menace.

For youths like Melisa Mhaka from Mashonaland West Province, the NYS has become a transformative experience.

“We are learning about the dangers of drug and substance abuse among youths. We have been taught to say no to drugs. Our health matters because we are the future leaders of this country, leaders who must be of sound mind, sober, and ready to lead the fight against drugs,” Mhaka said.

Other trainees echoed similar sentiments, noting that the NYS programme has instilled a deep sense of national unity and pride.

“We are here to promote peace, unity, and development in our country regardless of tribe, ethnicity, or race. We were taught that Zimbabwe is one, there is no Shona, Ndebele or Tonga, we are one people united to build our nation,” a trainee stated.

The three months of rigorous training have aided in the fight against drugs and substance abuse among youths, as they are barred from using any substance deemed toxic.

The head of Guyu Training Centre, Mrs Mildred Nembahe, affirmed that the centre enforces a strict anti-drug policy.

“Once the trainees arrive, any substances that could be misused are immediately withdrawn. As far as we are concerned, we are making headway in the fight against drug and substance abuse. The discipline instilled here goes a long way in deterring harmful behaviours.”

Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, expressed satisfaction with the programme’s success.

“Remain disciplined and steadfast. I am pleased that within two weeks you have internalised the training. I am particularly impressed that you are being educated on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, a menace we must all fight collectively.”

A total of 542 youths drawn from across the country are undergoing training at Guyu Vocational Training Centre, as the government intensifies efforts to shape a responsible, united, and drug-free generation.
