THE 2026 Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League got off to an exciting start on Saturday as defending champions Herentals Queens were held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Harare City Queens at Callies Sports Club.
Harare City, under the returning guidance of veteran coach Rosemary Mugadza, produced a spirited display and came within minutes of securing a famous victory over the reigning champions.
The hosts took the lead through former Herentals forward Shamiso Mutasa, who unleashed a superb strike to beat goalkeeper Lindiwe Magwede.
Harare City maintained their intensity throughout the first half, matching the champions stride for stride and at times, dominating proceedings in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Herentals had an opportunity to level matters before the break, but captain Polite Mabika saw her penalty saved by an outstanding Pamela Mhlanga, who delivered a commanding performance between the posts.
The second half remained fiercely contested, with both sides battling for control.
Herentals eventually found their equaliser in dramatic fashion when they were awarded a late penalty in the 88th minute.
Bethel Kondo kept her composure to convert from the spot and rescue a point for the defending champions.
Harare City coach Mugadza was pleased with her team’s performance.
“Last year we were fighting relegation, so to start the season by holding the defending champions is very encouraging. I am happy with the performance,” she said.
Herentals Queens coach Simbarashe Dedza acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents.
“We are happy with the point. Our opponents were very determined, but we fought hard and earned it,” he said.
Elsewhere, newcomers CAPS United Royals marked their top-flight debut with a credible 1-1 draw against former champions Black Rhinos Queens.
Mpopoma Sports Academy defeated fellow newcomers Rufaro Starlets 3-1 away from home.
Chapungu Queens delivered the performance of the day, thrashing Ngezi Platinum Queens 8-0 at Manyame Airbase.
Faith Drive Academy opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Cranborne Royals in Mutare.
Meanwhile, Kwekwe Queens edged Chegutu Community 1-0, while Correctional Queens were awarded maximum points after their scheduled opponents, Rise of Hope Academy, failed to fulfil the fixture.
