ZIMBABWE’S long-term rebuilding programme for the women’s national team began with a heavy defeat after the youthful Lady Chevrons fell to Pakistan in the opening One Day International of the ICC Women’s Championship series in Karachi this Monday.

With a clear focus on giving emerging players exposure at the highest level, Zimbabwe fielded a largely youthful side, signalling a long-term plan to build a competitive team for the future.

Captain Nomvelo Sibanda won the toss and elected to field first, but Pakistan capitalised, posting a commanding 330 for 5 in their 50 overs.

Openers Sadaf Shamas and Gull Feroza set the tone with a 162-run partnership, with Shamas narrowly missing out on a century after scoring 98, while Feroza added 50.

Sidra Amin then anchored the innings with an unbeaten 87, before Najiha Alvi provided late acceleration with a quickfire 56.

Chasing 331, Zimbabwe’s young side found the going tough and were bowled out for 162 in 36 overs.

Despite the result, there were encouraging signs, with 17-year-old Beloved Biza producing a composed half-century, while 20-year-old Kelly Ndiraya chipped in with 34 as the next generation showed glimpses of potential.

The match highlighted both the gap at the top level and the importance of continued investment in youth as Zimbabwe seeks to rebuild a stronger, more competitive women’s team.

The Lady Chevrons will have another opportunity to grow and respond when they face Pakistan in the second ODI on Wednesday.
