Inside Zimbabwe’s maternal health success story in Honde Valley

Story by Abigirl Tembo, Health editor

IN the misty valleys of Honde, where winding roads once separated expectant mothers from timely care, a quiet revolution in maternal health is unfolding at Hauna District Hospital, a place where life is not only delivered, but safeguarded with unwavering precision.

Since 2022, the hospital has recorded more than 4 000 safe births without a single maternal death, an extraordinary milestone that is reshaping confidence in Zimbabwe’s public health system.

From January this year alone, 446 mothers have safely delivered at the facility, each birth adding to a growing legacy of care, resilience and clinical excellence.

For communities in Honde Valley and beyond, the hospital has become a sanctuary, replacing fear with assurance and distance with dependable care.

“It was a painful experience when labour started, and I was rushed here. I was attended to quickly, and now I am holding my baby girl. I am very happy and grateful to the entire staff,” said Ms Sophia Uranda from Chavhanga Village, her voice carrying both relief and joy.

Inside the maternity ward, stories like hers unfold daily, stories of skilled hands, swift decisions and lives saved.

“I delivered my baby through a caesarean section. The doctors and nurses were available, and I received blood transfusions. The procedure was successful, and I delivered safely. This is my second child,” said Ms Colleta Ngende from Mandeya Village.

Behind this remarkable record is a system that works, quietly, consistently, and effectively.

Matron Tendai Serere points to a combination of early intervention, preparedness and resource availability as the pillars of success.

“We take pride in ensuring that every mother delivers safely and returns home with her health intact and her baby alive. Since January 2026, we have assisted 446 mothers to deliver safely, with all babies surviving. Since 2022, we have not recorded a single maternal death related to childbirth at this facility,” he said.

She explains that the hospital has strengthened its maternal care model, encouraging early antenatal booking, offering a waiting mothers’ shelter for high-risk pregnancies and maintaining critical supplies.

“We encourage pregnant women, especially those with complications, to stay at our waiting mothers’ shelter from around 33 weeks so we can monitor them closely. We rarely refer patients now because most services are available here. We are not experiencing medicine stock-outs, and our blood stocks are always sufficient,” Matron Serere added.

What was once a journey fraught with risk has been transformed into a coordinated continuum of care, where timing, expertise and infrastructure converge to protect both mother and child.

The success at Hauna reflects a broader national thrust to strengthen maternal and child health under Zimbabwe’s development agenda, including the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2), which prioritises reduced maternal mortality and universal access to quality healthcare.

In a country steadily advancing towards universal health coverage, the zero maternal death record at Hauna District Hospital is more than a statistic, it is proof that targeted investment, community trust and dedicated health professionals can turn even the most previously marginalised settings into centres of excellence.

Here, in the heart of Manicaland, every safe delivery tells a bigger story, one of progress, dignity and a healthcare system that is learning not just to treat, but to protect life at its most vulnerable moment.
