The Gweru Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund has gone a gear up, with various activities lined up to ensure youths also participate in the initiative earmarked to assist the less-privileged.
It was entertainment galore at Gweru’s showgrounds as the event lined up an array of activities aimed at attracting youths to be part of the noble cause which is usually a preserve for the elderly and the business community.
The event witnessed a sold out crowd which was treated to some burn outs and contemporary music, with Holly Ten and Poptain proving to be the crowd’s favourites.
The city fathers, who are targeting to raise an ambitious figure of 50 thousand United States dollars for the less privileged this year ,say they have come up with the latest innovations to attract youths to be part of the noble cause.
Gweru Mayor, Councilor Martin Chivhoko said, “We are saying we have a number of the disadvantage in our society. Several households have been left in the hands of the young due to the HIV and AIDS pandemic. Of late, we have witnessed some parents succumbing to corona virus. This leaves us with a burden to help these families as they also deserve to enjoy the Christmas holidays. We are happy with the response by the Gweru community towards this worthy cause.”
The Gweru community was amazed by the various activities that were on display at the fun-filled day.
A Gweru resident said, “It’s been an amazing experience watching the spins. We want to see such events on each and every weekend. The music was also great and I enjoyed watching Holy Ten on stage.”
“I came from Mozambique for this unique experience. I was happy to meet my brothers from South Africa and Zambia who came to have fun. I wish to participate in such activities in the future,” another said.
The Gweru Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, an annual event, is meant to ensure vulnerable communities also enjoy the festive season with joy, dignity and care.
