GOVERNMENT has been commended for its effective HIV prevention and reduction interventions which have resulted in a decline in the country’s HIV prevalence rate.
Zimbabwe has been making significant strides in reducing the HIV prevalence rate which now stands at 12.9% from 25% at the turn of the new millennium.
The general populace has since commended government for its proactive stance as the country pushes for an HIV-free generation by 2030.
The uptake of preventive measures such as condoms has contributed significantly to the decline in the HIV prevalence rate.
This was revealed when the nation commemorated International Condom Day this Monday.
“As we mark this day, we notice that condoms are one of the most effective methods that have worked over the years. The challenge remains with the younger generation,” said AIDS Health Care Foundation Prevention Manager, Mr Clever Taderera.
Apart from setting aside a budgetary allocation towards contraceptives, Zimbabwe became the first country in the third world to approve cabotegravir, an HIV prevention injection which has been approved by the World Health Organisation.
