Government poultry programme drives rural women’s empowerment in Beitbridge

THE Government’s women empowerment drive is yielding tangible results in Beitbridge District, where young women are transforming their livelihoods through the Presidential Poultry Programme.

The initiative is improving household incomes, enhancing nutrition and promoting sustainable livelihoods in rural communities, in line with the Second Republic’s inclusive development agenda.

Beneficiaries say the programme is providing them with a pathway to financial independence and economic resilience.

One recipient said the support received, including chicks and start-up funding, would significantly improve her family’s prospects.

“These chicks and funds will change my life because from here I am going to work very hard to make sure these chicks grow to give me profit and then be able to pass on to my fellow community members,” she said.

Another beneficiary described the programme as a vital source of empowerment for young women.

“I am grateful to be among the beneficiaries here in Malala. This is a major boost to me and my children because it will help me to look after myself and my family,” she said.

The programme is being implemented with support from Young Women for Economic Development, a ZANU PF affiliate focused on promoting economic inclusion for young women.

Beitbridge District representative Miss Lindiwe Nguluvhe said the initiative is designed to expand indigenous poultry production across the country.

“We are distributing chicks and interest-free funding from the President to these young women. The money is meant to improve their lives and empower them economically,” she said.

Beitbridge West legislator Honourable Thusani Ndou said efforts are also underway to improve access to finance for beneficiaries.

“We are working to help communities move out of poverty. We have engaged banks that have agreed to provide funding, and I have committed to act as guarantor so these young women can access financial support,” he said.

The Presidential Poultry Programme complements other Government empowerment initiatives, including Village Business Units and the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme, all aimed at fostering rural industrialisation, food security and community self-reliance.
