GOVERNMENT has commissioned the US$1.5 million West Nicholson Transhipment Siding, a key rail infrastructure project designed to improve the transportation of lithium concentrate and strengthen Zimbabwe’s mineral export logistics.
The new facility forms part of Government’s drive to revitalise railway infrastructure and improve the movement of bulk cargo, particularly from the mining sector.
Its commissioning comes as lithium producers increase processing of ore into concentrate for export, with the siding handling its first consignment from Gwanda Lithium destined for the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.
The project is expected to reduce reliance on road transport by cutting the number of trucks ferrying lithium concentrate to South Africa while improving export efficiency.
Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway General Manager, Mr Khumbulani Mabvura said the investment marks another step towards modernising the country’s transport infrastructure.
“We are witnessing the opening of a new logistics gateway for bulk minerals, a renewed commitment to rail-based transport, and a strong message that Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development agenda is alive and moving forward. In the spirit of Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2, this investment contributes directly to the broader national objective of building modern infrastructure, strengthening productive sectors, promoting value chains and supporting inclusive economic growth.”
Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe said the siding reinforces the province’s role as a strategic export gateway.
“The economic impact of this siding will be substantial. It will facilitate the transportation of lithium from the Gwanda lithium mines, positioning Zimbabwe to fully participate in the rapidly growing global market for critical minerals that support the clean energy transition.”
He said the facility would provide processed lithium with efficient access to international markets through the Port of Maputo while also supporting the transportation of other strategic minerals, including chrome and ferrochrome.
“Beyond lithium, the facility will also support the movement of other strategic minerals, including chrome and ferrochrome, thereby diversifying export earnings and strengthening the mining sector as a key driver of economic development.”
The commissioning of the transhipment siding aligns with the National Development Strategy 2, under which Government is prioritising industrialisation, innovation, value addition and beneficiation as Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030.
