Gladiators maintain top spot

Story by Raynald Ngwarati, Sports Reporter

GLADIATORS Cricket Club maintained the pole position in the cricket National Premier League after beating Scorpions Cricket Club by six wickets at Masvingo Sports Club this weekend.

The National Premier League entered Match Day 10 this weekend, with the top four sides all getting victories and keeping the heat on the final standings.

Sunday witnessed Takashinga Two maintaining second position after a 56-run win over Queens One Sports Club, while their name’s sake Takashinga One also claimed a six-wicket victory over Westside Cricket Club to consolidate the third spot.

Not to be outdone, Uprising Cricket Club won by a massive 178 runs over Rainbow One Cricket Club to remain level on points with Takashinga One.

On the same day, Amakhosi One Cricket Club had to rely on nerves of steel, as they narrowly got away with a four-run victory over Mutare Sports Club, while Kadoma Cricket Club were too strong for Bulawayo Athletic Club, thumping them by 120 runs.

The biggest highlight of the weekend featured the Gladiators’ firm hold on the league as they maintained their grip on winning the 45-over-a-side domestic cricket league.

Chevrons’ all-rounder Wesley Madhevere was instrumental in the win, scoring a decisive 110 not out as the Gladiators made light work of the Scorpions on Saturday.

In the end, his innings steadily steered the table toppers to a comfortable six-wicket victory with 27.4 overs to spare after putting 200 runs on the boards.

Meanwhile, Golden Bulls remained winless after choking to a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of second-from-bottom Mbizo on Saturday.

Golden Bulls anchor the standings without a point from 10 matches, while Mbizo’s win was their first in the current campaign.
