Four crew members injured as train derails in Hwange

Story by Mhlomuli Ncube

FOUR people were injured after another National Railways of Zimbabwe goods train derailed in Hwange on Tuesday afternoon.

The goods train derailed after hitting a haulage truck at a level crossing.

The incident comes hours after an NRZ goods train derailed and killed three people on the Mutare – Machipanda railway line.

According to NRZ spokesperson Mr Andrew Kunambura, the accident occurred when the train hit a haulage truck that did not give way at the Hwange industrial area level crossing.

“There was an accident in Hwange. It was a level road crossing accident in which a truck driver failed to observe regulations. All drivers are under instructions to stop at level crossings, which this particular driver did not do. The result was the accident where four people who were in the truck suffered injuries when the train, which was carrying coal on behalf of our customers, hit the truck. We expect the recovery process to be finalised by the end of the day today,” said Kunambura.

The Hwange industrial area level crossing is a busy intersection, with haulage trucks and trains loaded with coal to various destinations.
