THE transformation of the Geo Pomona Waste Management facility into a world-class restaurant is evidence of Zimbabwe’s capacity to repurpose infrastructure in support of domestic tourism growth.
The country’s recognition as Destination of the Year at the Berlin ITB Travel Show reflects a broader recovery in the tourism sector, underpinned by renewed investment in infrastructure. The restaurant, developed at a former dumpsite, illustrates how innovation can convert disused spaces into centres of economic and recreational value.
Geo Pomona Waste Management Company Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said hosting the President for a luncheon at what was once a dumpsite signals the scale of the site’s transformation.
Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume welcomed the collaboration between Government, the private sector and local authorities in enhancing service delivery.
President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the importance of harnessing Zimbabwe’s potential to attain upper middle-income status by 2030, noting that the Geo Pomona Waste-to-Energy project demonstrates the country’s ability to modernise waste management while contributing to electricity generation and easing the energy deficit.
