THE Judiciary will on Monday host a ceremony to mark the official opening of the 2024 Legal Year, with Chief Justice Luke Malaba expected to set the tone for the year.

As is tradition at the beginning of every year, the judiciary hosts a ceremony to mark the beginning of the legal calendar with this year’s term expected to be officially opened on the 8th of January.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Secretary Mr Walter Chikwanha says the stage is set for the official opening of the legal year.

“I can confirm that on Monday the Chief Justice will officiate at the opening of the legal year in Harare. Other judges will be presiding over opening ceremonies in other provinces.”

Mr Chikwana highlighted the significance of the ceremony.

“The idea is to announce to the nation that the 2024 legal year has begun, what it means is that we will be indicating to litigants and everyone else who want to visit the superior courts that the courts have opened for the first term in terms of court sitting and litigation.”

In December every year, upper courts that include the High Court, Supreme Court and Constitutional Court take a sabbatical from operations, hence marking of the opening of litigation in these courts at the beginning of the year termed “Legal Year”.
