David Whitehead awakens

Story by Bruce Chahwanda

Government’s drive to resuscitate ailing companies is bearing fruit, with David Whitehead Textiles now operational.

A spinning plant in Kadoma and a fabric manufacturing plant in Chegutu are also up and running employing nearly 500 people.

The injection of US$20 million by Agri Value Chain Zimbabwe (AVCZ) into David Whitehead Textiles has brought life to Kadoma and Chegutu, which has seen the installation of high-tech fabric manufacturing equipment employing hundreds of people.

Employees at the plant are excited about the opportunities brought about by the Second Republic through its Zimbabwe is Open for Business Mantra.

The company targets to produce more than ten million metres of fabric and five thousand tonnes of cotton lint annually, employing more than one thousand people when fully operational.

Besides fabric manufacturing, the firm has plans to venture into oil extraction from cotton, soyabean and sunflower, among other crops.

The existence of David Whitehead completes the cotton value chain as it starts from lint to yarn and then fabric. Government pledged to create employment opportunities through resuscitation of companies and the David Whitehead story is now reality.
