FARMERS in Beitbridge District have begun the winter wheat planting season on a strong footing following the distribution of inputs under the Presidential Inputs Programme.
The rollout, conducted in Tshaswingo on Monday, is expected to enhance production and strengthen household food security as preparations gather pace.
Beneficiaries welcomed the support, expressing optimism about improved yields this season.
“We really appreciate the support we always get from Government as we start our winter wheat planting season,” a farmer said.
“Today, I have learnt the best way to plant winter wheat, and I hope it will help us to get a good harvest,” another farmer said.
Others said the programme will help cushion rural households against food shortages.
“This wheat is going to help us to be food secure after harvesting,” a beneficiary said.
Local leadership described the initiative as a turning point for community-level food security.
“We are good to go now after getting such assistance from Government… this is a game changer in food security within our community,” Senior Village Head Tshaswingo, Mr Onious Nguluvhe said.
Development partners are also playing a complementary role in supporting farmers.
“We are working together with Government to make sure farmers have food security, and as a business, we also help farmers to market their crops,” Project Coordinator Welthunger, Mr Ronald Tirivavi said.
Agricultural authorities have urged farmers to plant on time to maximise yields and mitigate climate-related risks.
“We are urging farmers to start planting on time and to supply grain to the Grain Marketing Board,” District Agricultural Officer Beitbridge, Mr Orpheous Ndlovu said.
The initiative forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader drive to boost agricultural productivity and achieve national food security under Vision 2030.
