Epworth Magistrates Court enhances residents’ access to justice

Story by Peter Chivhima, Courts Reporter

THE new Magistrates Court in Epworth has provided a convenient and accessible platform for justice delivery in the peri-urban area.

More than 3000 criminal cases have been dealt with and completed at the Epworth Magistrates Court since it was opened in 2023.

Besides dealing with criminal matters, the Epworth Magistrates Court has also handled numerous cases, including domestic violence, which is prevalent in the area.

“The establishment of this court has been a game-changer. My husband and I have been embroiled in a dispute since 2012, constantly relocating in search of resolution. We had another altercation today, which prompted me to visit the police. I was advised to come here and obtain a property letter, enabling us to divide our assets,” said a resident.

The Court has also brought convenience to the residents of Epworth who used to travel to the Harare City centre and Chitungwiza for court services.

“We have been facing challenges of travelling long distances to seek remedies but we are happy that the coming in of this court, we have been relieved. We can now report our cases on time.”

“Since the coming in of this court here in Epworth, we have seen that crime has reduced. We are also happy that the government is transforming this area,” a resident added.

Government is rolling out several initiatives to bring justice closer to the people, with 15 residential and regional magistrate courts established in 2024.
