WOMEN in Mwenezi East constituency have applauded government efforts aimed at empowering women and safeguarding their rights.
Beneficiaries say a number of empowerment programmes introduced in their communities are transforming livelihoods and creating new economic opportunities.
The initiatives, which range from agricultural support programmes to access to finance and value addition projects, are enabling women to participate more actively in local economic development.
Women in Mwenezi East say the various projects being implemented in the constituency are improving household incomes as the Second Republic advances its development mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
One beneficiary said training and support in traditional grain farming had helped improve production.
“I am into traditional grain farming, and we have seen change because now we have people who teach us how we can be better farmers. Our harvest has improved, and we aim to produce for the export market.”
Another woman highlighted the role played by the Women’s Bank in supporting female entrepreneurs.
“We got money from the Women’s Bank and invested in cattle fattening. Our business is doing well, and we are grateful that the government has been instrumental in helping us as women.”
Others pointed to opportunities in natural resources and value addition, particularly through the collection and processing of mapfura.
“Now we have sustainable means of earning a living, we now pick Mapfura and supply at the processing plant, where we are given money.”
“We are grateful because all these avenues are being opened up for us as women, and we are doing the most to take up the space,” beneficiaries said.
Mwenezi East legislator Honourable Sheila Chikomo also acknowledged government initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of women in the constituency.
“We see that in this constituency a lot is being done by the government to ensure women are better placed. Women are taking part in various projects being spearheaded by the government and development partners. We now have industries in the constituency which are employing women, and apart from that, banks are giving start-up packs for women who want to invest in business.”
As Zimbabwe marks Women’s Month, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s empowerment, economic participation, and the protection of women’s rights.
