ZIMBABWE has joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Day of Cooperatives with government saying they play a significant role in socio-economic development.
The commemorations were held at Madyangove School in Chivi, where the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa stressed the importance of cooperatives in economic development.
“Cooperatives in Zimbabwe have demonstrated their capacity towards building the economy, as the movement has major achievements, which are both member and community-centred. Cooperatives have the ability to promote inclusivity and social cohesion. They bring people from different backgrounds together and provide them with opportunities to work together towards a common goal, creating a better future for all,” she said.
Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira urged communities to form cooperatives and benefit from government programmes including financial support.
“Cooperatives have changed the lives of many and government remains committed to assist. We are saying in your communities form cooperatives, register and benefit from government support to venture into various businesses to improve your livelihoods,” he said.
With over 10 000 registered cooperatives countrywide, Zimbabwe National Cooperatives Federation called upon the government to assist with training to ensure professionalism and transparency.
“We want to thank the government for continuing to support us, many families are surviving through these cooperatives. We ask for assistance in terms of training of our members,” said Zimbabwe National Cooperatives Federation President, Mr Mike Duru.
Government is currently reviewing the Cooperative Policy of 2005 and the Cooperative Societies Act to enhance governance in the sector.
