CHRISTIANS across Zimbabwe are observing Holy Saturday with reflection, prayer and renewed hope, as preparations intensify for Easter Sunday celebrations marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
On the eve of Resurrection Sunday, Zimbabwe joined the global Christian community in commemorating Holy Saturday, the period between the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a day regarded as central to the Christian faith.
Throughout the country, congregations held services, while others prepared for night vigils, as believers looked forward to Easter Sunday with a message of hope, renewal and redemption.
“This is a very important time for us as Christians because we believe that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven and our lives are renewed. It is a chance to start again, to be restored, and to strengthen our faith. That is why this moment is so meaningful to the Christian family,” said Raymond Rutsito.
“For me, Easter Eve is a time to reflect on what Christ went through for us. It reminds us of sacrifice, but also prepares us for the joy of the resurrection. It’s a time to pray, to reconnect with God, and to strengthen our faith,” added Rosemary Goredema.
Clergy from different denominations described Holy Saturday as a moment of spiritual preparation and anticipation of the resurrection, which defines Christian belief in hope and salvation.
“This moment is very significant. While it may seem like everything is finished, like Christ in the grave, it is not the end. As Christians, we are not mourning; we are expectant, because we know the resurrection is coming. Whatever situation people are going through, it is only temporary. Even as a nation, we may be down, but we are not out. There is hope, because in Christ, it is never over until it is over,” said Ephias Jengeta of Family Worship Tabernacle.
“The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our faith, because through it, sin and death are conquered, and salvation is given to humanity. Many great people have lived and died, but Christ rose again. That is what makes us Christians. The Easter celebration, especially the resurrection, is what defines our belief and gives meaning to our faith,” said Richard Tsanangurai Majuta of St Mary’s Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
“The cross is at the centre of our Christian faith. It represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for humanity, and through it, we receive forgiveness and hope. Without the cross, there is no foundation to our belief,” added Edwell Goredema of Methodist Church in Zimbabwe.
While observed in different ways, Holy Saturday continues to hold deep spiritual significance, reminding Zimbabweans of the enduring message of hope, renewal and faith ahead of Easter Sunday celebrations.
