CHIREDZI District is set to host this year’s Masvingo provincial Independence celebrations, with the main commemorations scheduled for Gibbo Stadium on Saturday, as preparations and rehearsals were conducted this Thursday to ensure smooth proceedings.

The development marks a significant milestone under the Government’s decentralisation agenda, with residents expressing excitement at hosting the national event for the first time in the Lowveld.

Local communities gathered to witness rehearsals, with many describing the occasion as historic and long overdue.

“We are really happy that these celebrations have come here, cannot wait for Saturday,” a resident said.

“This shows that we have been remembered because this is the first time here in the Lowveld we are hosting such an event,” another resident said.

“We had to come and see the rehearsal because we are excited we will be seeing the drills live and direct,” a community member said.

“This is good, we used to see this on television, but now we will be seeing this live and direct here in Chiredzi,” a third resident said.

Authorities say preparations are complete, with thousands of people expected to converge at Gibbo Stadium for the celebrations marking Zimbabwe’s 46th Independence anniversary.

Secretary for Masvingo Province and Devolution, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa, said all logistical arrangements were in place.

“Everything is now in place for the Provincial celebrations. We are expecting thousands to gather as we celebrate 46 years of independence. There is a lot to expect apart from the drills, a lot of entertainment is lined up to bring life to the celebrations,” he said.

The event is expected to bring colour and pageantry to Chiredzi as the province joins the nation in commemorating Independence Day, with residents set to experience the celebrations live for the first time.
