Chimombe, Mpofu presentencing hearing set for Wednesday

THE pre-sentencing hearing for Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu who were convicted of fraud has been set for this Wednesday, ahead of their sentencing on a date to be determined by the court.

Earlier on Monday, through their lawyers, the convicted duo who defrauded government of US$7 million in a tender scam which they used forged documents to win a tender to supply goats for the Presidential Goats Pass-On Scheme made an application to stay the pre-sentencing hearing requesting a written judgment from Justice Pisirayi Kwenda.

The defence argued that the written judgment was critical for preparations of the pre-sentencing hearing.

However, this application was dismissed, prompting yet another application by the defence to appeal to the Supreme court.

Justice Kwenda noted that he could not give them leave to make an appeal to the Supreme Court and set the pre-sentencing hearing for Wednesday.

The defence, however, said they will approach the Supreme Court this Tuesday.

The duo was arrested last year and was convicted last week after a full trial.
