ZIMBABWE pulled off a stunning upset at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, defeating Australia by 23 runs at Colombo’s R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Friday to keep their Super Eight hopes alive.
Before the match, cricket analytics site Cricinfo had pegged Zimbabwe’s chances of victory at just 19 percent. Even at the halfway stage, the odds remained grim.
But under the scorching Colombo sun, the Chevrons defied the numbers and delivered a disciplined performance that rewrote the story.
After setting Australia a target of 170, Zimbabwe’s bowlers executed their plans flawlessly. The standout was Blessing Muzarabani, who claimed four wickets for 17 runs—the best bowling figures by a Zimbabwean at a World Cup.
Muzarabani struck early to secure crucial breakthroughs and later dismissed Matt Renshaw, who had threatened to turn the game with a fighting 63. That wicket proved decisive as the Australians ran out of both time and options.
“Blessing was exceptional. He gave us the momentum and ensured we stayed ahead,” a Zimbabwe player said after the match.
Zimbabwe, who missed the previous World Cup and entered this tournament with only three wins from their last ten T20 games, have now won back-to-back matches and are firmly on course for the next round.
The victory continues Zimbabwe’s proud tradition of upsetting cricketing powerhouses on the World Cup stage, a legacy spanning more than four decades and now carried forward by a new generation of players.
The Chevrons next face Ireland, with another win potentially securing passage to the Super Eight stage.
