Campus radio transforms education, innovation and community engagement

CAMPUS radio stations are increasingly becoming vital instruments for national development, with institutions such as Great Zimbabwe University and Harare Polytechnic using student-led broadcasting to educate, inform and empower communities.

Beyond entertainment, these platforms are amplifying youth voices, fostering civic engagement and equipping aspiring media professionals with practical industry skills.

They are also serving as important channels for disseminating information on education, entrepreneurship, innovation and community development.

Research shows that campus radio stations function as grassroots development tools by improving access to information, encouraging public participation and strengthening communication skills among young people.

Great Zimbabwe University Campus Radio director, Dr Golden Maunganidze said the station is playing a pivotal role in both student development and community empowerment.

“At Great Zimbabwe University Campus Radio, we are giving students a platform to engage on issues that matter, from education and entrepreneurship to community development. Through our programming, we are equipping young people with practical broadcasting skills while disseminating information that empowers communities and supports national development initiatives,” he said.

The impact is already being felt beyond the campus environment.

Chairperson of Garikai Fruit and Vegetable Market in Masvingo, Mr Martin Shaka said the station has become a valuable source of business and market information.

“Campus radio is helping us with information on markets and business, and that is improving our livelihoods and supporting national development,” he said.

Students are also benefiting directly from the hands-on training and community engagement opportunities.

“Campus radio is giving me practical skills while helping to inform and empower communities,” said one student.

Launched in 2020 as Zimbabwe’s first campus radio station, Great Zimbabwe University Campus Radio has evolved into far more than a platform for music and entertainment.

It has become a dynamic training ground where students sharpen their broadcasting skills while contributing meaningfully to the socio-economic development of surrounding communities.
