CAF coaching courses return as ZIFA prioritises technical development

ZIMBABWE’s football coaching landscape is regaining momentum following the revival of Confederation of African Football (CAF) training programmes, marking a significant step by the new ZIFA administration toward rebuilding the game’s technical foundations.

For the first time since 2017, local coaches are participating in a CAF B refresher course currently underway in Harare. The initiative, introduced under the Nqobile Magwizi-led ZIFA board, comes as part of efforts to restore continuous professional development for coaches across all levels.

Earlier this year, ZIFA rolled out a CAF C course attracting high interest, including from active players preparing for life after football.

The latest CAF B refresher, the first since Zvishavane eight years ago, has been met with enthusiasm from participants eager to upgrade their knowledge and align with modern coaching standards.

“I am more than happy that this has returned, and we want to thank the ZIFA leadership for doing this so that football can improve,” Sheasham assistant coach, Luke ‘Petros’ Jukulile said.

“This is definitely a step forward and as a coach, this will enhance me. I am back in the class to sharpen my tools and learn new tricks. Remember, the game is evolving, so we need to consistently have these courses,” Green Fuel goalkeepers coach, Innocent Chogugudza stated.

“The capacitation of coaches is very important, and we can see it has been prioritised. That is a key step toward improving football in the country so that we can match international standards. Personally, I have learnt a lot,” Hwange Coach Njabulo Dube noted.

The renewed pathway has also opened doors for others in the game to map out their next chapter.

“I am a referee, and coaching helps me to understand technical aspects that make me a better referee. I am planning to retire soon and get into coaching, so these courses help me prepare to transition smoothly rather than starting later,” referee, Nkanyiso Moyo said.

Course instructors include ZIFA Technical Director Dominique Niyozima, veteran coach-educator Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe, newly-certified instructor Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda and Dr Joseph Sibindi, among others.

Plans are already underway for a CAF A refresher ahead of the full diploma course next year.
