THE Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe has been hailed as a key platform for empowering young people to participate in national governance, with learners from Mashonaland Central preparing to take part in the opening of the 34th session next week.

The province has selected its representatives ahead of the annual gathering, where junior parliamentarians are expected to debate issues affecting young people and contribute to policy discussions.

One of the representatives said the opportunity would allow learners to raise concerns affecting their communities.

“I am fortunate to have been chosen to represent my school and the youths of Muzarabani. They face a lot of challenges, and I will highlight their plight.”

Another representative described the appointment as a significant responsibility.

“Representing the youths is a life-changing opportunity that I will not take for granted.”

Addressing the selected learners, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to ensuring young people have a voice in national development.

“The Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe remains one of the most important platforms through which young people participate in leadership, contribute ideas and influence policies that affect their lives and communities,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Youth Council, which coordinates the programme under the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, said the initiative plays a vital role in nurturing future leaders.

“The Junior Parliament provides an important platform for leadership development, civic participation and nation building. As the Zimbabwe Youth Council, we remain committed to nurturing responsible, patriotic and visionary young leaders,” said Zimbabwe Youth Council Provincial Director, Mr Felix Kapungu.

Mashonaland Central Province will be represented by 34 junior parliamentarians comprising 18 constituency junior legislators, six senators, six women’s quota representatives, two chiefs, one youth quota representative and one disability quota representative.
