Bulawayo children’s centre offers lifeline through after-school programmes

A newly built children’s centre in Emganwini, Bulawayo, is providing a vital support system for more than 130 vulnerable and orphaned children aged between five and 18.

The ZARA Centre, designed with architectural inspiration drawn from Great Zimbabwe’s stone structures, is advancing Government’s vision of inclusive development by safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable groups.

Through structured after-school programmes, the centre offers holistic support, with children introduced to computer skills from an early age.

“They teach us how to use the computers, that is why I love coming here,” one of the children said.

Alongside digital learning, participants are also engaged in programming and robotics, while others develop practical skills such as sewing, beadwork and art, fostering independence.

“They teach us different skills. For instance, I love sewing. These skills help us to be responsible and able to do things on our own,” one child said.

“What I am doing here is beadwork. I enjoy beadwork because I am passionate about art and craft,” another said.

Founder and Board Chairperson, Ms Lesley Goldwasser, said the centre is designed to nurture potential and provide a safe environment for growth.

“It is a safe place for them to go after school. It is a place where they thrive and grow in terms of different life skills.”

As concerns over drug and substance abuse persist, the initiative is also helping to steer children away from harmful influences.

Bulawayo Mayor, Senator David Coltart, commended the programme, noting its role in addressing social challenges.

“This is such a noble initiative because we are losing young people to drug and substance abuse, but through such initiatives, we will be able to keep them busy.”

The ZARA Foundation was established in 2007 in response to the HIV epidemic, which left many children orphaned, and continues to provide support through community-based interventions.
