MRS Hazar Seremwe, a breast cancer survivor, is a testament to the power of early detection in the fight against cancer, which accounts for 40% of deaths in Zimbabwe.

Speaking at World Cancer Day commemorations held at Chikangwe Stadium in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West Province, Gogo Seremwe shared how a friend’s advice led her to seek medical attention for a lump in her breast.

Despite skepticism from some, she underwent surgery and has remained healthy since 2005.

Her story underscores the National AIDS Council’s (NAC) commitment to integrating HIV and cancer-related programmes, emphasising early detection and community empowerment.

Representing NAC’s Chief Executive Officer, Mashonaland West Provincial Manager, Mr David Nyamurera, highlighted the public health threat posed by HIV-related cancers.

The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, reaffirmed the government’s pledge to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment through the procurement of mammography machines.

He also announced the launch of the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) 2025-2030, a strategic roadmap focusing on prevention, treatment and care.

This year’s World Cancer Day, themed “United in Uniqueness,” highlights the importance of collective action in the fight against cancer.
