Advancedmobile X-ray units boost Zimbabwe’s fight against tuberculosis

A free tuberculosis (TB) screening campaign powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled X-ray technology is underway in Banket’s Kuwadzana suburb, offering residents rapid access to advanced diagnostic services aimed at detecting the disease early and reducing transmission.

The three-day initiative, running at Kuwadzana Clinic until Friday, is being implemented by the Union Zimbabwe Trust (UZT) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care under the Life Saving Facility and Community-Based Service Delivery Support Project.

Medical teams are deploying mobile X-ray units equipped with AI software capable of identifying potential tuberculosis cases within minutes, enabling early diagnosis and immediate referral for treatment.

Speaking during the campaign, UZT Regional TB Technical Advisor for the Northern Region, Dr Tawanda Mapuranga, said the programme is focusing on groups considered most vulnerable to the disease.

The targeted populations include miners, healthcare workers, people living with HIV, diabetics, the elderly, and individuals who have been in close contact with TB patients.
Residents welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention given the health risks associated with mining activities and exposure to agricultural chemicals in the area.
Health officials say the adoption of AI-powered screening technology is strengthening efforts to identify cases that might otherwise remain undetected, helping to curb the spread of tuberculosis and improve health outcomes in communities.
The campaign forms part of broader efforts to expand access to early TB detection and treatment services while leveraging emerging technologies to enhance disease surveillance and public health interventions.
