VETERAN coach Herbert Maruwa has been handed the task of steering Manica Diamonds away from relegation after another turbulent season that has left the Mutare-based side fighting for survival.
Just two seasons ago, the Gem Boys finished fourth in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and appeared poised to challenge for major honours.
However, financial difficulties last season disrupted the club’s progress, forcing them into a relegation battle they survived by the narrowest of margins.
The 2026 campaign has proved even more unstable.
Manica Diamonds have appointed four coaches in just 22 league matches. Tafadzwa Mashiri started the season before being replaced by Clifton Kadurira following the AMV takeover. Kadurira made way for Patrick Mandizha, whose tenure was also short-lived.
Maruwa now becomes the fourth coach to take charge this season, averaging just five matches per predecessor.
The constant changes have left the Gem Boys second from bottom with 12 matches remaining.
Despite the club’s struggles, the new executive, led by Evans Kamombo, remains confident Manica Diamonds will retain their top-flight status.
“The team has improved since we took over. We will bolster the team so that we survive relegation. We will be in the top flight next season. The young boys are giving the team the energy to go forward,” Board Member Justice Matsatsira said.
Maruwa’s first assignment will be a daunting home fixture against CAPS United at Sakubva Stadium on Saturday.
Makepekepe are also desperate for maximum points after going six matches without a victory.
Elsewhere, MWOS host AGAMA in another relegation battle, TelOne welcome ZPC Kariba to Ascot Stadium, while FC Hunters face Chicken Inn at Heart Stadium.
Ngezi Platinum entertain Herentals at Baobab Stadium, while FC Platinum travel to Luveve to face Bulawayo Chiefs.
Sunday’s headline fixtures see Highlanders attempt to end Scottland’s nine-match winning streak at Barbourfields Stadium, in-form Dynamos host former champions Simba Bhora at Rufaro Stadium, while Hardrock take on struggling Triangle United at Chahwanda Stadium.
