ZIMBABWE cricket legend Andy Flower has emerged as the leading contender to become England’s next Test coach following the departure of Brendon McCullum.
British media reports say the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is keen to reappoint the former Zimbabwe captain, with bookmakers also installing him as the favourite for the role.
Flower previously enjoyed a highly successful spell as England coach between 2009 and 2014, guiding the team to the number one position in the ICC Test rankings.
During his tenure, England secured three Ashes series victories and celebrated historic Test series wins in Australia and India.
The former Zimbabwe captain’s proven record at the highest level has placed him firmly at the forefront of the race to lead England’s Test side once again.
The main hurdle remains Flower’s franchise cricket commitments. However, the expiry of his Indian Premier League coaching contract could clear the way for a return to the England set-up.
