THE Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) held a funeral parade for Major General (Retired) Evaristo Dzihwema at Charles Gumbo Barracks in Harare this Friday, with military colleagues, family members and senior officials paying tribute to his distinguished service to the nation.

The parade provided an opportunity for colleagues and relatives to reflect on the life and career of the former senior military officer, who died on June 25 while receiving medical treatment in India.

Major General Fidelis Mhonda said the late officer’s commitment to duty earned him steady progression through the ranks.

“He rose through the ranks during his career because of his dedication to duty.”

Former colleague Ernest Chetse remembered Major General (Retired) Dzihwema as a committed public servant who played a leading role in veterans’ affairs.

“He was a dedicated and committed man when I worked with him at the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Ministry. He was also the one leading the vetting of veterans of the liberation struggle.”

Family spokesperson Shadreck Dzihwema described the late officer as a pillar of the family.

“We have lost a family man. We always followed his footsteps.”

Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Emmanuel Matatu, said the nation had lost a patriotic officer whose military career was marked by professionalism and dedication.

“We gather here under a sombre atmosphere as we pay our last respects to the late, who passed away on June 25 in India. We pay tribute to his exemplary work ethic during his service. He took all courses commensurate with his rank in the army,” he said.

Major General (Retired) Dzihwema served in several senior positions after his military career, including as Chief Director in the Ministry of Youth and later in the Ministry of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs. He also served as a member of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Board.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Dzihwema, and three children.
