AFRICA’S World Cup campaign is on the brink after Algeria became the sixth team from the continent to be eliminated, leaving Morocco as the only African nation to have secured a place in the Round of 16.

The expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup saw a record 10 African nations qualify, with nine advancing to the Round of 32. However, the knockout stage has proved a stumbling block, with exits mounting for the continent’s representatives.

Morocco remain Africa’s only confirmed Round of 16 side after overcoming the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties. The Atlas Lions, who became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final at Qatar 2022, once again demonstrated their resilience in knockout football.

Algeria joined the list of eliminated teams after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland earlier this morning.

South Africa were the first African side to exit after losing 1-0 to co-hosts Canada, while Côte d’Ivoire fell 2-1 to Norway.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s maiden appearance in the knockout rounds ended in a 2-1 defeat to England, while Senegal suffered a dramatic 3-2 extra-time loss to Belgium.

Africa’s hopes now rest on Egypt, Ghana and Cape Verde, who are all aiming to extend the continent’s presence in the tournament.

Egypt face Australia after progressing from a challenging Group G that included Belgium, Iran and New Zealand.

Ghana meet Colombia in their Round of 32 tie, while Cape Verde face defending champions Argentina in the toughest assignment among the remaining African teams.
