Former opposition supporters join ZANU PF, praise development initiatives

THIRTY former opposition members from Kwekwe, Zvishavane, Hwange, Gokwe and Harare have joined ZANU PF, citing ongoing development programmes and economic initiatives being implemented by the Government.

The group officially crossed the floor during an event held in Harare on Friday, with several of the new members saying they were encouraged by development projects being undertaken across the country under the Second Republic.

Some of the returnees said they were impressed by infrastructure development and other initiatives which they believe are transforming communities.

“We cannot keep fighting from outside, we have realised that Zimbabwe has been put on a global platform through President Mnangagwa’s development trajectory,” a new party member said.

“I am happy with what the Second Republic is doing across the country. We used to see these kinds of development in neighbouring countries, but we are now leaders in road infrastructure,” a returnee said.

“I used to represent ZINASU, we were the ones running around to derail government efforts, but we have realised Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo ndokusaka ndadzoka kumusha,” a new ZANU PF member said.

“I am the prodigal son, I am back to my roots to assist in the country’s transformation agenda,” a returning party member said.

Speaking at the event, ZANU PF National Political Commissar, Cde Munyaradzi Machacha, urged the new members to remain committed to the party and support its programmes.

“As new members, there are those who will try to frustrate you through internal dynamics; you must be motivated to remain vigilant in support of the party programmes. The masses are the ones who elevate us, let us continue empowering our grassroots with information regarding party programmes,” he said.
The latest defections come as ZANU PF continues to attract new members, with party officials attributing the trend to empowerment initiatives and development programmes being implemented across the country.
