Zimbabwe marks International Day of Families

ZIMBABWE joins other countries in commemorating the International Day of Families, with the Government reaffirming its commitment to protecting and strengthening families as the foundation of national development.

In a media briefing in Harare this Wednesday, Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa revealed national commemorations will be held in Lupane District this Friday.

“As we commemorate this important day, the Government remains concerned about the growing inequalities that continue to affect families and children. These challenges include poverty, unemployment, drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence, child neglect and unequal access to opportunities and services. Such conditions undermine family stability and negatively affect the well-being and future of children. In response, my Ministry continues to play a central role in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, community development and social inclusion. The Ministry works to ensure that women, men, girls and boys have equal access to opportunities, resources and protection necessary for their holistic wellbeing.

The Ministry also promotes gender equality through the implementation of the National Gender Policy. The Policy seeks to advance social justice and inclusive sustainable development by promoting equal access to leadership, economic opportunities, education, healthcare, clean energy, information and digital technologies. It further prioritises the prevention of gender-based violence, disability inclusion and climate resilience, with the overall objective of building empowered and inclusive communities where no one is left behind.

Gender mainstreaming across Government programmes remains critical in reducing discrimination and ensuring equitable access to development opportunities for all members of society. This contributes to stronger families and more supportive environments for children to thrive. Another key area of focus is the prevention and response to Gender-Based Violence, which continues to undermine family wellbeing and expose women and children to heightened vulnerability.

The Ministry conducts awareness campaigns on domestic violence, child marriages, abuse and other harmful practices, while also supporting survivor protection and rehabilitation services. On the sidelines of the commemorations, the Ministry will also host the Matabeleland North Business Expo, which will provide Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with an opportunity to showcase products and services, establish market linkages and network with key stakeholders.

As we commemorate the International Day of Families 2026, I urge all stakeholders to continue working together to create environments where families can thrive and where children are protected, nurtured and empowered to realise their full potential. I further call upon all Zimbabweans to actively participate in the commemorations and related programmes to be held across the country following the launch, in recognition of this important day,” she said.
