Van As strikes gold as Team Zimbabwe makes strong start at Africa Aquatics Championships

ZIMBABWE’S top swimmer Anje Van As set the tone with a golden performance as Team Zimbabwe made a strong statement on the opening day of the Africa Aquatics Championships in Algeria on Tuesday.

Van As powered to a brilliant gold medal in the 200 metres butterfly event, leading a three-medal haul for the country in a high-energy start to the continental competition.

Team captain, Paige Van Der Westhuizen added to the tally with a silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle, while rising junior Alexis Johnsen underlined the nation’s promising future by also claiming silver in the same event.

Mikayla Makwabarara narrowly missed out on the podium but delivered a commendable fourth-place finish, capping a solid all-around showing by the Zimbabwean swimmers.

Competition continues this Wednesday in Algeria with Zimbabwe looking to secure more medals.
