Football fraternity in shock over Marinica departure

THE local football fraternity was left with more questions than answers after Warriors head coach Marian Marinica resigned this Monday, just five months after his appointment, citing personal reasons.

Marinica’s resignation comes at a time when the Warriors are preparing for the Unity Cup set for the United Kingdom next month.

Former Dynamos captain Justice Majabvi expressed concern over the impact of frequent coaching changes on team cohesion.

“We are all eager to understand the reasons behind Coach Marinica’s resignation. He had begun integrating players based in the UK with those in the national team setup, which could have improved cohesion. It is important for coaches to stay longer because many of our players are now based in Europe and need adequate time to build understanding, especially ahead of major tournaments.”

Football analyst Willy Mutingwa said Zimbabwe should reconsider its approach to coaching stability.

“The first thing is that we must desist from changing coaches frequently. We should settle for a more stable technical direction, possibly with a local coach. For instance, Michael Nees was dismissed after qualifying the team for AFCON despite a series of draws, and now Marinica has also left after just five months. This cycle is not helping the team progress.”

Fans cited pressure on the coach, who once faced criticism for leaving out Marshall Munetsi and Jordan Zemura when he took the Warriors to AFCON in Morocco last year. There, the team failed to win a single match, exiting the tournament in the first round with only one point.

“As the Warriors fans, we are in shock and we were not expecting him to leave anytime soon, but those left will take up the lead and we have no choice but to move on.”

“The challenge now is that we have no idea why he resigned, maybe he has his own reasons, but the disadvantage is on the players as they were now used to their coach and the system,” another fan cited.

“This will affect the team as we were expecting improvement in the upcoming matches, now he has left again. We need to look for another coach which keeps us going back and not progressing,” a fan stated.

Kaitano Tembo has been appointed Interim Head Coach and will lead the team for the upcoming Unity Cup assignment in the United Kingdom.

He will be assisted by Takesure Chiragwi, who has been appointed Assistant Coach, bouncing back to a role he resigned from last year.
