The International Basketball Federation has endorsed a power-sharing arrangement at the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe, paving the way for Johnson Shumba to assume the presidency of the national basketball governing body.
The agreement resolves a leadership impasse that emerged following a tightly contested election in which Shumba and David Pick each secured five votes, resulting in a deadlock.
Under the FIBA-approved arrangement, Shumba will serve as president for the first two years of the four-year term.
He will then hand over to David Pick, who will initially serve as vice president before assuming the presidency for the remaining two years.
In its correspondence, FIBA said the arrangement had been accepted on an exceptional basis in the interest of stability and continuity within Zimbabwean basketball.
The global basketball governing body also urged both leaders to work collaboratively and set aside any differences for the advancement of the sport.
FIBA emphasised the importance of a united leadership focused on implementing a shared strategic vision for basketball development in Zimbabwe.
The agreement is expected to bring stability to the union and allow it to concentrate on key priorities, including grassroots development, talent identification, and the strengthening of domestic competitions.
Stakeholders will now be looking to the new leadership to harness this opportunity to revitalise Zimbabwean basketball and chart a clear path for the sport’s future growth.
