ZIMBABWE has made history by becoming the first African nation to host the World Karate Federation Youth Camp.
The 18th edition of the Karate One Youth Tournament got underway at the City Sports Centre on Thursday, attracting more than 200 karatekas from around the world in a vibrant display of skill, discipline and cultural exchange.
For the first time, the prestigious WKF Karate One Youth Tournament is being held on African soil, with Zimbabwe rising to the occasion as host.
From the sharp precision of kata to the explosive intensity of kumite, the tournament is delivering a thrilling spectacle, reinforcing the country’s growing stature on the global karate stage.
Zimbabwe’s rich martial arts heritage continues to inspire, with legends like two-time world champion, Shihan Samson Muripo, paving the way for the next generation now stepping into the spotlight.
This year’s edition has attracted competitors from 35 nations, all battling for supremacy across youth, cadet, and under-14 categories.
“This is the highest level of karate at your level, that is why it is called Karate One. It has been held in different continents, but this is the first time in Africa, and Zimbabwe is a befitting host. You can see from the start, everything is in order, and the level of karate is high,” World Karate Federation Technical Commission Chairperson Mohamed Elhosieny said.
Beyond the medals, organisers say the event is a powerful catalyst for growth, unity, and opportunity.
“We are grateful to be chosen as hosts; it means a lot. Getting this tournament to be on African soil is massive, not just for karate but for the country itself. This will spur growth of the sport in the country, and we believe it will arouse interest so that many people get to appreciate martial arts as a sport that enforces discipline and fights drug and substance abuse,” Zimbabwe Karate Federation President Sensei Joe Rugwete said.
With over 30 local karatekas in the mix, Zimbabwe’s young fighters now carry the hopes of the nation as the tournament runs through to Saturday.
