AS Zimbabwe rolls out the carpet for continental academic excellence, delegates from across Africa arrived at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport ahead of the 8th edition of the Africa Spelling Bee Championship, set to begin in Harare this Friday.
The competition, hosted by the Zimbabwe Spelling Bee, will bring together top young minds from at least 14 countries, marking a significant moment for youth development, literacy, and cultural exchange on the continent.
Among the early arrivals is the team from Nigeria, brimming with confidence of reclaiming the continental title after hosting last year’s edition.
“It is a nice experience. I have never been to Zimbabwe, and most of my team has not either. We are happy to be here, and our spellers are well prepared, so I believe they will do well. The competition builds confidence and character, especially in public speaking, and at an African level it creates a sense of community and Pan-Africanism. It is not just about spelling it is educational, cultural, and brings us together,” programs director for Nigeria spelling bee, Love Joshua said.
“ I have been preparing since August last year, and I have been working really hard for this moment. I feel ready for the competition, and I am excited to be here and represent my country. I am looking forward to doing my best,” a student noted.
Beyond the contest, organisers said the championship is about building confidence, promoting unity, and celebrating the intellectual potential of Africa’s young people.
“The 8th edition of the Africa Spelling Bee is here in Zimbabwe. We were in Nigeria last year and Uganda in 2023. It is important for us to be here because it gives our country, our team, a chance to showcase their talent. We have about 10 countries participating, around 70 spellers, and a total of 100 delegates for the competition. This contest is really important it builds confidence in children and improves literacy. We are very confident in the Zimbabwe team, and we hope they will take home the trophy. Last year, we did well in the senior category, and we hope that since Zimbabwe is the host this year, they will win the championship,” National Director Zimbabwe Spelling Bee Competition, Eneresi Chomusora said.
Zimbabwe now carries the torch as host, with expectations high for a successful and inspiring showcase of African excellence.
