Defence Forces Service Commission targets technology-driven military modernisation

GOVERNMENT is moving to integrate artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies into the operations of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) as part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency and modernise national defence systems.

The development follows the induction of a seven-member Defence Forces Service Commission in Kadoma this Wednesday.

Chairperson of the Public Service Commissions, Dr Vincent Hungwe, emphasised the need for defence institutions to embrace emerging technologies to strengthen strategic capabilities.

“In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, the Commission’s effectiveness will increasingly depend on its ability to leverage modernisation and automation to enhance transparency, efficiency and strategic decision-making in managing the Defence Forces.”

The commissioners pledged to fully execute their mandate, with plans already underway to visit various military bases to assess operational needs and conditions of service.

Commissioner for the Defence Forces Service Commission, Commissioner Patricia Sarah Bwerinofa, said the engagements will provide an opportunity to better understand the challenges faced by personnel on the ground.

“We have just completed our induction and our next step will be to visit various bases of the ZDF to gain first-hand appreciation of the operational environment. These engagements will allow us to assess the needs of personnel on the ground and ensure that issues of welfare, working conditions and capacity development are adequately addressed through the Defence Forces Service Commission,” Commissioner Bwerinofa said.

Another commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Okay Mabhena, said the adoption of advanced technologies is critical for modern defence systems.

“As the Commission, we recognise that modern defence systems are increasingly driven by technology. It is therefore critical that the ZDF progressively integrates artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to enhance efficiency, strengthen strategic planning and improve the overall effectiveness of national defence operations,” Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mabhena said.

Other members of the newly inducted commission include Commissioners Sheila Mahere-Nyagumbo, Cleopas Murongazvombo, Mavis Gonde and Peddie Magoba.

Government says the move aligns with global trends in defence modernisation, where armed forces are increasingly adopting advanced technologies to improve operational readiness and strategic decision-making.
