HIV-positive women in Mangwe are living positive and empowered lives, embarking on life-changing poultry, horticulture, and micro-lending projects that are transforming their livelihoods and restoring dignity.
Through poultry, horticulture, and micro-lending initiatives, these women have found strength in unity and purpose in progress. Their story is one of resilience, a testament to courage in the face of adversity, and a reminder that healing begins when communities stand together.
Calling themselves women of valour, the group has replaced stigma with solidarity. Their collective spirit is transforming both attitudes and livelihoods across Mangwe.
“We now have road runner chickens and we are also lending each other ZAR250 and we follow on each to see what you have done with the money, some people who are not HIV positive now want to join our group,” the group’s leader, Samkeliso Nkomo said.
The women, part of the Community ART Refill Group (CARG), say the initiative has helped them overcome stigma and rebuild their confidence.
“No-one talks bad about us anymore, people now understand that HIV is just another virus,” said a member.
“Since I joined this group I am living with hope, I now have a chicken project thanks to this initiative,” noted another.
With clinics such as Ingwizi serving close to 1 400 HIV patients from just two wards, the National AIDS Council (NAC) and the Ministry of Health and Child Care have rolled out several community-based strategies including Malayitsha and Sista to Sister Initiatives to strengthen awareness and support systems in the fight against HIV.
“We are happy that we are making inroads, these women have fought stigma in the community and also open discussions on the virus will make everyone responsible for fighting the spread of HIV,” said NAC Programs Assistant for Mangwe, Elenny Mpofu.
Despite HIV remaining a significant challenge in Bulilima, Mangwe, and Matobo districts of Matabeleland South, these women continue to inspire their communities, showing that healing starts when unity, empowerment, and resilience come together
