Zimbabwe’s Shaolin Warriors Face Funding Crisis Before Continental Championships

ZIMBABWE’S Black Shaolin Warriors Wushu Kungfu team is ramping up training ahead of the Africa Wushu Kungfu Championship set for November 29 in Francistown, Botswana.

Despite their focus and determination, the team faces the risk of missing out, as financial challenges threaten to derail their journey to the continental stage.

With five countries already confirmed for the continental showdown, the team’s passion and preparedness are clear, but so are their financial struggles, which threaten to block their participation.

Grandmaster Tonderayi Shumba says the fighters are ready for both performance and combat demonstrations, but they lack the resources for travel, accommodation, and even basic documentation for some athletes.

“We have been preparing, and five countries have so far confirmed their participation. We have been invited as well. Our warriors are ready for the displays and the fighting as well,” he said.

Hosted at the Red Dragon Shaolin Temple, the championship promises a vibrant display of martial arts culture, speed, and discipline.

“We are expecting to depart in November 24th, but we do not even have the transport and accommodation fares to go there. Some of our athletes do not even have proper documentation, so we are appealing for support,” Shumba added.

For Zimbabwe, the event is also a key stepping stone towards two major competitions in 2026, the 3rd African Youth Wushu Championship in Cape Town and the 18th World Wushu Kungfu Championship.

However, unless urgent financial support is secured, the dream of showcasing Zimbabwe’s homegrown Shaolin talent on the continental stage could slip away.
