Masvingo Mayor’s cheerfund half marathon debut sees huge turnout

MORE than 100 participants took part at the inaugural Mayor’s Cheerfund half marathon as the Masvingo City Council targets to raise US$20 000 for underprivileged groups.

The half marathon saw different age groups including 70-year-old Gogo Rosemary Mudyahoto participating in the 5km, 10 km and 21 km race.

Participants said the programme remains very important for their physical and mental wellbeing.

“I am excited to be part of this half marathon race and I have been participating in many of these just for the sake of my physical fitness. What prompted me to register again is because the proceeds are going to assist vulnerable groups like my age mates who are at various old people’s homes,” said Gogo Mudyahoto.

“I took part in the 10km fun race category and it was quite encouraging. It is my hope that the Mayor’s Cheerfund half marathon will continue to grow,” noted a participant.

Masvingo Mayor Councilor Alec Tabe said they are overwhelmed by the support given the number of participants who took part at the inaugural half marathon event.

“For the year 2024, we are targeting to raise Us$20 000 for the cheerfund. We held a golf tournament, a dinner and now a half marathon as we continue to fundraise for our vulnerable groups in communities. Such events are very important for our physical and mental wellbeing. We are going to use these funds to assist vulnerable groups in our communities around Masvingo City, talk of children’s homes, old people’s homes, orphans and persons with disabilities.”

Apart from the half marathon, a series of fundraising events have been held to raise funds for the Cheer Fund including a golf tournament and a fundraising dinner from where all the proceeds will be donated to disadvantaged members of the community.
